And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things? And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
Mark 11:27-30
The chief priests, scribes and elders came to Jesus with one of the most difficult conundrums in their archives. Jesus answered this question with a question because of the intent of their hearts and the did not ask further questions because the answer was very obvious.
Nicodemus confessed that Jesus was a teacher from God and no one could perform the miracles Jesus did if God were not with him.
Jesus did not usurp power from them. All authority in heaven and on earth was given to Jesus. Matthew 28:18
