Riches and eternal life

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
1 Timothy 6:17-19 KJV

It is very easy to get carried away in this materialistic world and to depend on wealth and riches. One could say in his mind, that after all, ‘money answereth all things’. There is the temptation to be arrogant and trust in riches that are so uncertain. This does not mean Christians should not be ambitious or that they remain laid back but to find a balance and to truly believe that it is the living God that gives us richly all things to enjoy.

One of the ways to find balance is to do good to others by being ready to give out and willing to communicate. You have to be generous to people, do not be parsimonious and of course be wise not to throw your pearls to dogs. Lay a good foundation for yourself against the time to come thay you may lay hold on eternal life. Eternal life is not earned by good works for it is the gift of God so no man can boast. God is generous in nature and has given us all things out of which we can give to show the nature of God in us.

The rich man and Lazarus is an example of how we ought to show concern for others. The rich man was not judged based on his riches but lack of compassion towards Lazarus. The rich man might have blamed Lazarus for being lazy and an opportunist and hence he failed to see that Lazarus really needed help.
