Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your
burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.
For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the
day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or
sacrifices:
But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and
I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that
I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.
Jeremiah 17:21-23 KJV
Obedience is better than sacrifice. It is better to obey the
voice of the Lord and walk in his ways than try to justify oneself by offering
sacrifices. The only sacrifice required of us is a sacrifice of praise. That we
praise our God with all our hearts and do what he says not what we think or
like. Jeremiah reminded them to walk in
obedience so that it may go well as God had declared. God sees the heart and
not outward appearance. We should be true to our words otherwise the sacrifices
mean nothing to God.
We sometimes hope that God will understand even when we deliberately
take some actions that we know will offend God. Perhaps God will turn a blind
eye because He is full of grace and truth. Yes, God does forgive our sins but forgiveness
or grace is not a licence to continue in sin. We are not exempted from the consequences
of our actions. The soul that sins shall die. We must turn from sin and God
will continue to give us grace to obey Him. Don’t do wrong deliberately hoping
to offer plenty sacrifices to please God. Obedience is better than sacrifice
