The disciples were astonished because rich men are usually honoured by all men especially when the source is verifiable and legitimate. They have worked hard to merit their bragging rights and status.
The cure for poverty is knowledge about wealth creation and wealth accumulation. God's favour does not nullify labour but that God blesses the work of diligent hands. Anyone can rightly apply the principles of wealth creation and accumulation and will become rich.
The issue that can arise from wealth and material prosperity is trusting in riches and ignoring God who gives power to get wealth. The kingdom of God cannot be inherited with money. There must be balance and that was why Jesus told the rich man to sell everthing and give to the poor. This way he will not put his trust in his riches to earn him eternal life.
Riches has its place in our lives for money answereth all things but not eternal life. Eternal life is not for sale to the highest bidder. It is the gift of God so that no man can boast.
Do not put your hope in riches. Put your hope in God who richly blessed us with all the good things money cannot buy.
