Jesus knew how to hold a conversation with a woman who ordinarily would not have listened to him because of the hostility between Jews and Samaritans. He started by asking for a drink which was not too hard to do. We naturally want to help others but the barriers of tribe, gender, religion and other barriers usually get in the way. Jesus broke every barrier by holding this conversation with the Samaritan woman. It was the Samaritan man who helped another man who was attacked.
Though Jesus might have needed a drink because it was in the heat of the day, the drink was a nice pick up line. His main objective was to help her discover who she truly is in God. We should not be divided but united in Christ. We have to break down every barrier of unity and progress in our nation. We all belong to God first and God wants us to come to him as we are.
