We love God because he first loved us. He demonstrated his love for us when Christ died for us while we were still sinners. The Church in Ephesus had a lot of good works to their credit. They could not bear evil and they tried those who called themselves apostles but were not. This church laboured patiently and could be the perfect model but they had one issue that Jesus would not overlook- Love.
Every good work must be subjected to the Love test and only when it passes this test that God is pleaded. Apostle Paul taught on this very matter of love in 1 Corinthians 13. He concluded that love is the greatest. The issue with the Ephesian church was that they had left their first love to cling to their great works. They left out God's love to cling to religion. Love God and love your neighbours as yourself. This sums up the commandment. Let all you do be done out of love.
